European appetites for delicate Chinese porcelain reached such feverish heights that a special range of porcelain came to be produced in the Jingdezhen county of Jiangxi province. The "export porcelain" was manufactured for European tastes and featured anything from family crests to Tyrolean dancers. Many of them had universally unoffensive motifs like birds, puppies and butterflies, and were often brightly coloured. But why would Chinese artisans produce enamels of sailboats and Adam and Eve? Would European buyers truly not have appreciated traditional Chinese designs? Purists sniff and thumb their noses, but looking at Liu Dao's sparkling LED butterflies and glowingly festooned vase, one has to admit that sometimes these intercultural disconnects, misperceptions and confusions produce the most strangely beautiful babies.
