BLURB

Butterflies have long been a symbol of metamorphosis, representing constant and inevitable change. In the Emperors’ courts, Porcelain represented foreign trade and world connection as it was so widely traded along the Silk Road.  The vase is a signature of the coveted fine ceramic that became so synonymous with its ancient, Chinese origins it became known as “China”. By using these two, classic, Chinese symbols of change and tradition, Liu Dao reflects on the resilience and adaptability of the Chinese people while also considering its global positioning. In appreciating the beauty of this simple moment, the brevity of the caterpillars’ flight and fragility of the curved incarnation of the clay Kaolin, we are reminded of the precious and precarious nature of each phase of stability and prosperity.
