When you're a Leftover Woman (剩女), every day is a battle. A battle for freedom, for independence, for sanity. "Why aren't you married yet?" "When will you meet a nice man?" "Can I set you up with someone?" are the bullets we dodge in this war against 5000 years of culture that dictates that women ought to be married by 26. We are constantly under siege from parents, university friends, coworkers. But they don’t understand, I am married: to my career, to my sky-rise apartment in downtown Shanghai, to my imported wine collection and my wardrobe full to designer suits. Why give all of this up for a fat, balding accountant and a snotty baby? But in war, you have to know when to pick your battles. So, fine, mother, I’ll go on that blind date with your cousin’s friend’s nephew. I’m sure it’ll be a seriously entertaining disaster. [Leela Shanker]
