The heady smells of burning incense filled my senses adding to my disorientation, I was well and truly lost in the grand bazaar. Brightly coloured fabrics hypnotized me, pungent yet inviting food smells tempted me and little children followed me, sizing me up as either a friend or a meal ticket. I lingered at the spice stalls, wishing I was adept enough in the kitchen to purchase each exotic spice and do them justice. Finally tearing myself away, I found myself in a small alleyway leading just off the main market, furniture and all manner of goods spilled out of the wonderland like doors. The alleyway was filled with interesting but odd knick knacks that seemed out of place. I knew how that felt. I was drawn into this place and promptly invited inside a small hole in the wall shop. The shop keeper welcomed me with a knowing smile, pointed to his many wares and said “amal al-rūm wa’l-shīna ‘alā akhtalaf al-ashkāl wa tabayin al-ajnās wa’l-anwā”. He certainly wasn’t wrong, I found this amazing Chinese Kangxi vase and wondered what it was doing, like me, far from its land… [Margaret Johnson]
