From Buck Rogers and H.G Wells to Star Wars, Liu Dao salutes one of
sci-fi cinema’s most familiar trappings: the mighty ray gun. Considering the
optimistic futurism of the early to mid 20th century, the ray gun is
just one contraption that always seemed to be lying just around the corner.
Taking residency with food in capsule form, personal jet packs, time traveling
cars, matter transporters, flying spaceships and personal robot servants, they
continue to remain in the realms of genre fiction. Reaching its zenith in the
50’s and 60’s, the ray gun was met with real-world scientific breakthroughs in
laser technology (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation).
Such technology no doubt fed into the popularity of the huge armory of toy
weapons. In ‘Weapon of Choice’, Liu Dao pays homage to the timeless and mighty
ray gun, just make sure you run when you hear ‘PEW PEWPEW’. [Margaret Johnson]
