It was his favorite vase. The twirling blue patterns against the creamy backdrop satisfied every part of his mind, there was no way of improving upon its design. Having been a potter most of his life, he understood the complexities of creating a vase such as this. From the lump of clay, which held all the promise, to the wheel and the rhythm of placing his hands around the shiny mud, spinning it to a thing of beauty. Placing it in the kiln, firing it again and again, until it could withstand the knocks life would throw at it. The mixing of the glaze, swirling the liquids into the right color, carefully applying the base and then the finishing coat. Re-firing it, then adding the final pattern, the blue filigree upon the white base. What resulted was a thing of beauty, which would last for as long as one was careful with it. He couldn't quite tell why it was so flawless. He hadn't changed his routine during its making. Yet, as every artist knows, there are some works which almost seem to make themselves, their hands simply being the vessels through which the art is channelled. This was one such work. He sat there, gazing at the pot placed beside his chair, his large hands, now weak and useless, twitching as he remembered their old strength and the days and weeks which went into its making.
