Grandpa used to love pacing up and down the house supported by his wobbly cane, stopping to talk to his beloved Penjing (盆景) occasionally. My puckish older cousin Mankit (文傑) used to steal his cane when he was engrossed in the inspection of the penjing’s health. Then the next thing I would see was 文傑 running and screaming out to the garden looking for grandmothers shovel, wielding the cane above his head in a path of boyish destruction. Grandpa stopped checking the delicate tree’s health the following year, but the cane stood adamant like the Queen’s Guard next to his armchair, occasionally performing the honor of giving swift kicks to Mankit’s little butt.
If there is one thing that my cousin never dare lay his sticky chocolate and dust coated hands on was the vase in the living room. My grandmothers prized possession. The loquacious little devil would turn into a mute in front of the quiescent vase with a half opened mouth staring hypnotized for seconds until he heard the prying sounds of the shovel in grandmothers garden.
A vase hides secrets of a household; it stands silently year after year, gazing pensively, as if ‘life' has no limit. Or perhaps, it’s waiting for Angels to bring flowers to it. Imaginably, its only existence is to witness life. Presumably, without it, we forget our memories or to tell our grandchildren the same story our grandparents once told us. The air, the smell, the tears and the laughter all merrily left hieroglyphic winkles on the vase without its permission. And yet, it stood silently. Waiting, just like grandfathers cane.
