Still lifes are often passed over for splashier contemporary genres or the dignified carcasses of ancient art, but do they really only deserve the waning minutes of a museum visit? You think, oh look here, another vase with flowers, another bowl of oranges, another slab of meat on a table, but when the layers are peeled away, such artworks reveal a complex window onto the culture that produced and admired such paintings. Backgrounds in the works of artists like Adriaen van der Spelt and Frans van Mieries often included references to classical myths that were enjoyed by those in on the joke. Certain types of flowers, such as red and white tulips in seventeenth-century Netherlands, were examples of the most expensive and desirable blooms, thus symbolizing wealth and power. The insects that crawled over decaying specimens aren’t just lifelike touches; they represent the passage of time and the fleeting quality of human wealth and power. The snapshot of yesteryear, still lifes can tell us a lot about the material culture that produced them. What then, do electronic butterflies say about you? What does your standing here, in this exact spot, say about the life you’ve lived and breathed? Carry on. [Kathleen McCampbell]
